The 21-year-old singer shared her excitement on Instagram shortly after the announcement, posting “Grammy nominated!!!!!! Thank u!!!!!!!!!!!!!! @recordingacademy.” The recognition follows an already remarkable year for McRae, as the song previously earned two MTV Video Music Awards for song of the summer and best editing.
McRae’s nomination places her in a competitive lineup alongside Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco for “Bluest Flame,” Lady Gaga for “Abracadabra,” Zara Larsson for “Midnight Sun,” and PinkPantheress for “Illegal.”
Her recognition comes as a surprise to many, considering her latest album, So Close to What, received no Grammy nods despite being her most commercially successful release to date. The album, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 after its February 21 release, includes fan-favorite singles “Revolving Door,” “It’s OK I’m OK,” and “Sports Car.” McRae’s energetic promotion included performances on Saturday Night Live, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and the VMAs.
The Canadian-born artist was not considered for best new artist at the 2026 Grammy Awards, as she had already been submitted three times in previous years, reaching the category limit.
McRae is currently wrapping up her So Close to What world tour, which began on March 18 in Mexico City and concludes on Saturday, November 8, in Inglewood, California. The tour features 81 shows and includes her newest single, “Tit for Tat,” a song that has sparked speculation about a recent breakup.
