In this conversation, Tung and Briney share insights into filming the emotional finale, Belly’s transformation, and what could lie ahead in the just-announced Summer I Turned Pretty movie.
Q: Lola, what was it like exploring a new side of Belly during her time in Paris?
Lola Tung: It was so much fun. Paris was the perfect setting for the end of Belly’s story. I loved working with the actors who played her new group of friends — they were so wonderful and completely delivered. It felt like the right environment for her to find herself again.
Q: The anticipation for Conrad and Belly’s reunion was huge. How did you handle the pressure of filming those emotional final scenes?
Christopher Briney: There are always scenes you’re nervous for, especially ones with so much emotion. The pace of filming didn’t leave much time to overthink — we were getting new scripts while shooting other episodes. I just tried to stay grounded and ready.
Lola Tung: For most of the season, it was about Belly being in Jeremiah’s wedding headspace. To make that believable, I had to stay in that moment and not get ahead of myself. When it came time for the finale, everything needed to feel different — deeper than any moment they’d had before.
Q: Belly calls herself “the villain” in the finale. How did you approach that moment?
Lola Tung: That’s her taking responsibility for her choices. She knows she made mistakes, but that doesn’t make her a villain. Everyone in the story has messed up in their own way. Conrad reassures her of that later, which shows they’re learning to forgive themselves.
Q: Fans have waited years for Conrad and Belly to reunite. Chris, how did you approach that responsibility?
Christopher Briney: The best way I could do justice for the fans was to honor the script and trust Jenny Han’s vision. If I did the work and showed up ready, then the story would resonate.
Q: Jeremiah played a huge role in this season. Do Belly’s lingering feelings for him affect her reunion with Conrad?
Lola Tung: It’s been a year, but those emotions don’t just disappear. She still cares for Jeremiah as a person and doesn’t want to hurt him. It’s complicated, but that’s part of the story.
Christopher Briney: I don’t think Conrad sees it as a threat. He knows Belly had a meaningful relationship with Jeremiah, but it’s a different kind of love.
Q: The Summer I Turned Pretty movie is officially happening. What do you know so far?
Christopher Briney: Not much! We knew it was an idea for a while, then suddenly it was real. Jenny has a draft, but we haven’t seen what’s next yet.
Lola Tung: I’m excited to see where it goes. Chris keeps joking that he wants Conrad in a cool car for the whole movie, but we’ll see.
Q: Looking back on the series, what are you most proud of?
Lola Tung: I’m proud of the journey, the growth, and how thoughtful everyone was about every detail. It means so much to people, and that’s special.
Christopher Briney: The show was tough to make at times, but we had such a talented cast and crew. I’m proud of what we created together.
Q: Lola, fans still ask: Team Conrad or Team Jeremiah?
Lola Tung: I’ve always said Team Belly — and I really mean it. She had to choose herself before she could choose anyone else.
