Ruby Rose Blames Sydney Sweeney for 'Christy' Box Office Failure, Calling Her a 'Cretin'
Ruby Rose has publicly criticized Sydney Sweeney for the disappointing performance of Christy, the new biographical film about Hall of Fame boxer Christy Martin. The movie, which earned only $1.3 million during its opening weekend, has sparked strong reactions from both fans and former cast hopefuls.

The former Batwoman star took to Threads on Monday to express frustration over Sweeney’s casting and the film’s final outcome. “The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing,” Rose wrote. “I was attached to play Cherry. Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay. It’s part of why I stayed in acting.”
Christy stars Sweeney as Christy Martin, the trailblazing boxer who elevated women’s boxing to national prominence. The film follows Martin’s rise through the ranks, her turbulent marriage to her abusive trainer, and her struggle to come out as a lesbian athlete.
Rose expressed disappointment that Sweeney was chosen to portray Martin, saying she believed the role required more authenticity. “Christy deserved better,” she wrote. “None of ‘the people’ want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us. You’re a cretin and you ruined the film.”
Her comments appeared to be a response to Sweeney’s own Instagram post earlier that day, where the Euphoria actor reflected on the movie’s emotional impact despite its underwhelming box office numbers. “We don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact,” Sweeney wrote alongside photos from the film’s set. “Christy has been the most impactful project of my life. Thank you, Christy. I love you.”
Public opinion surrounding Sweeney has been increasingly polarized. The actor faced backlash following a controversial American Eagle campaign tied to her “good jeans” slogan. Reports later surfaced that she had registered as a Republican voter in Florida ahead of the 2024 presidential election. Her growing support from conservative figures, including Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, has further fueled debate online.
Despite the criticism, Sweeney has not directly addressed her political affiliation. Ahead of Christy’s release, she told PinkNews that she was “excited” for the LGBTQ+ community to see the film. “She is an unbelievable advocate for the community and I believe this is a beautiful story to tell,” Sweeney said.
