Fallon initially approached the subject with humor, telling the audience, “The big story is that Jimmy Kimmel was suspended by ABC, after pressure from the FCC leaving everyone thinking, ‘WTF.’” He then grew serious, saying, “I don’t know what’s going on — no one does. But I do know Jimmy Kimmel, and he is a decent, funny and loving guy. And I hope he comes back.”
The show took a creative turn when Fallon delivered his monologue with censorship interruptions whenever his punchlines referenced former President Donald Trump. At one point, Fallon joked about Trump’s U.K. visit, with an announcer cutting in to replace the punchline “Jeff… Goldblum” before Fallon continued mocking Trump’s remarks about U.S.–U.K. relations.
Guests on the episode included Jude Law, Jonathan Groff, and NBC Nightly News anchor Tom Llamas. Law briefly acknowledged the controversy, expressing hope that Fallon would remain on the air.
Kimmel’s suspension followed comments he made on Jimmy Kimmel Live! regarding the alleged murderer of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Kimmel criticized attempts by political groups to frame the incident for partisan gain, saying, “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”
The controversy surrounding late-night television drew further attention when Trump celebrated Kimmel’s suspension on social media. Trump praised ABC’s decision and attacked the ratings of other hosts, calling Fallon and Seth Meyers “losers” and urging NBC to take similar action.
