Sony pushes 'Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse' to target global summer box office

‎Sony Pictures Animation has officially pushed back the release of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, now slated to debut in theaters on June 25, 2027. The new date represents a three-week delay from its original June 4, 2027 release, strategically repositioning the highly anticipated sequel to better align with the global summer movie season.

‎Studio sources indicate that the adjusted timing is designed to attract a broader family audience. By late June, a greater portion of school-age children in both the United States and key international markets will be on summer break, providing an ideal window for a major animated tentpole release. The move is also seen as beneficial to the film’s international box office prospects, particularly in regions where early June school sessions could dampen opening-weekend attendance.
‎The Spider-Verse series continues to serve as a cornerstone of Sony’s animation portfolio, delivering both critical acclaim and box office success. The franchise began with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in 2018, which not only won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature but also garnered $393.6 million worldwide. Praised for its revolutionary animation style and narrative innovation, the film quickly established a lasting legacy.
‎Its follow-up, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, premiered in 2023 and elevated the series even further, grossing an impressive $690.5 million globally. The sequel expanded the franchise’s multiverse concept, ending on a suspenseful cliffhanger that left audiences eager for the next chapter.
‎Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse picks up directly from the events of its predecessor. The film is directed by Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson and is written by the creative team of Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and David Callaham—names that have become synonymous with high-quality animated storytelling in the superhero genre.
‎Sony has also announced the release of a separate animated project titled Buds, now scheduled to hit theaters on March 12, 2027, as the studio continues to expand its animated offerings.
