‎Released globally in 2024 by Sony Pictures, with the exception of China, the original film achieved a significant commercial milestone, earning over $230 million at the worldwide box office. The unexpected success has prompted the development of a sequel, bringing back several of the original production partners.
‎Alcon Entertainment’s co-founders and co-CEOs, Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, are set to produce the follow-up installment. They will be joined by producers John Cohen, Steven P. Wegner, and Chris Pratt himself. The production will once again be bolstered by Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios, which is partnering with Alcon to co-produce the new project.
‎Animation will be led once again by DNEG Animation, the studio responsible for bringing Garfield’s distinctive look to life in the first film. Their return ensures visual continuity and maintains the animation quality that contributed to the film's broad appeal across global audiences.
‎Prior to the launch of the initial film, Alcon secured the rights to Garfield from the character’s original creator, Jim Davis. Davis, who introduced the world to Garfield in 1978 through his comic strip, will resume his role as executive producer for the sequel. Bridget McMeel, representing Amuse, is also attached as an executive producer for the upcoming installment.
‎Currently, producers are in the process of selecting both a writer and a director to guide the project forward. No announcements have been made regarding additional cast or plot details at this stage.
‎Chris Pratt’s schedule remains packed with high-profile roles beyond the Garfield universe. His upcoming slate includes Mercy, a feature film for Amazon MGM, and Way of the Warrior Kid, developed in partnership with Apple and Skydance. Pratt continues to be represented by UTA, Rise Management, and law firm Sloan Offer.
