The director is co-writing the screenplay with frequent collaborator Sjón, continuing the creative partnership that powered The Northman. Scheduled for a North American theatrical release on Christmas Day 2026, Werwulf will delve into the werewolf mythos through Eggers’ signature atmospheric lens.
Production is being led by Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner of Working Title, with Eggers and Sjón also on board as producers. Chris and Eleanor Columbus of Maiden Voyage are attached as executive producers, lending further credibility to the high-stakes horror project.
Focus Features, which previously released Eggers’ Nosferatu, is once again involved. The studio has a longstanding relationship with the filmmaker, having supported The Northman, The Witch, and The Lighthouse, and handled international distribution via Universal International.
A stylized reinterpretation of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic, Nosferatu captivated audiences last December, grossing over $181 million globally. Depp portrayed a young woman haunted by Count Orlok (played by Bill Skarsgård), with Taylor-Johnson taking on the role of vampire skeptic Friedrich Harding. The ensemble cast also included Nicholas Hoult, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney, and Willem Dafoe. The film’s $40 million domestic debut exceeded expectations and solidified Eggers as a key figure in modern gothic cinema.
Taylor-Johnson’s recent credits include 28 Years Later, Kraven the Hunter, The Fall Guy, Bullet Train, Tenet, Nocturnal Animals, and Godzilla, reinforcing his versatility across genres.
Depp’s body of work spans independent films and major productions alike, with performances in Wolf, Silent Night, Voyagers, The Dancer, The King, and HBO’s controversial series The Idol.
The initial report on Taylor-Johnson’s casting in Werwulf came from Nexus Point News, sparking significant industry buzz around Eggers’ next dark vision.
