‎2025 Emmy Awards nominations: 'Severance,' 'The Penguin,' and 'The Studio' lead the pack

‎The Television Academy has officially announced the nominations for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, and Severance emerges as this year’s most celebrated contender. The Apple TV+ psychological drama leads the field with 27 nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series, asserting the streaming platform’s growing influence in prestige television.

‎Close behind, The Penguin earns 24 nods, while both The Studio and The White Lotus tie with 23 nominations each. HBO and Max once again secure dominance across categories, highlighting the platforms’ continued critical acclaim.
‎In the highly competitive drama race, Severance faces stiff competition from Andor, The Diplomat, The Last of Us, Paradise, The Pitt, Slow Horses, and The White Lotus. Each show brings a unique blend of storytelling, visuals, and star power to the lineup.
‎The Studio not only impressed critics but also made Emmy history by tying the record for the most nominations for a comedy series in a single year—matching The Bear’s 2024 record. It will compete for Outstanding Comedy Series alongside Abbott Elementary, Hacks, Nobody Wants This, Only Murders in the Building, Shrinking, The Bear, and What We Do in the Shadows.
‎Noteworthy firsts and milestones further distinguish this year’s nominees. Kathy Bates, at 77, becomes the oldest nominee ever for Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role in Matlock. On the opposite end of the age spectrum, 15-year-old Owen Cooper of Adolescence breaks ground as the youngest-ever nominee for Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.
‎Hollywood legends Martin Scorsese and Ron Howard earn their first acting Emmy nominations for guest roles in The Studio, while Harrison Ford secures his debut nod for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Shrinking. Uzo Aduba also makes headlines with a nomination for The Residence, a series canceled after just one season.
‎The Emmy organizers surprised many by revealing two key categories—Reality Competition Program and Talk Series—live on CBS Mornings. The Traitors, RuPaul’s Drag Race, Survivor, Top Chef, and The Amazing Race were named in the competition lineup, while The Daily Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert made the cut in the talk category, which was reduced to just three nominees this year.
‎A second wave of top-tier nominations was revealed during a livestream hosted by What We Do in the Shadows star Harvey Guillén, actress Brenda Song, and Television Academy chair Cris Abrego. The livestream aired from the Wolf Theatre at the TV Academy’s Saban Media Center and was available on the Emmys' website and YouTube channel.
‎The 77th Emmy Awards ceremony, hosted by comedian Nate Bargatze, is scheduled to broadcast live on CBS from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 14, at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT. Viewers will also be able to stream the event live and on demand through Paramount+.
‎Preceding the main event, the Creative Arts Emmy Awards will be presented over two nights: Saturday, September 6, and Sunday, September 7. These ceremonies will honor the technical and behind-the-scenes achievements that power the television industry.
‎Last year’s ceremony saw Shogun emerge as the top winner with 18 total awards including Outstanding Drama Series. The Bear made history by securing 11 wins in a single comedy season, despite Hacks taking the prize for Outstanding Comedy Series.
