The first installment of Michael is scheduled for release in April 2026, covering Jackson’s career from the Jackson 5 to his 1979 solo success with Off the Wall. A second film is expected to follow, though no release date has been confirmed.
Speaking on Instagram Stories, Paris explained that she reviewed an early draft of the script and provided notes about what she felt was dishonest. When her concerns went unaddressed, she stepped away from the project, saying, “Not my monkeys, not my circus.”
Her remarks followed Domingo’s comments at the Venice Film Festival, where the actor — who portrays Joe Jackson — thanked Paris and her brother Prince for their guidance. Paris rejected that characterization, writing online, “Don’t be telling people I was ‘helpful’ on the set of a movie I had 0% involvement in lol that is so weird.”
Paris criticized the film’s overall approach, comparing it to other Hollywood biopics such as Bohemian Rhapsody and The Dirt. She argued that the movie presents a controlled narrative aimed at a certain segment of her father’s fans. “The narrative is being controlled. And there’s a lot of inaccuracy and there’s a lot of just full-blown lies,” she said.
The production of Michael has faced delays and controversy. Initially set for release in April 2025, the film was postponed following 22 days of reshoots, later moved to October 2025, and then again to April 2026. Reports indicate the reshoots focused on the film’s third act, which originally explored the 1993 allegations against Jackson but reportedly violated a legal agreement related to that case.
Despite criticism from Paris, the project has the support of the Jackson estate. Jaafar Jackson, Michael’s nephew, stars in the lead role. The cast also includes Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson, Larenz Tate as Berry Gordy, Laura Harrier as Suzanne de Passe, and Kat Graham as Diana Ross.
Paris did not provide specific details about the inaccuracies she identified in the script, and representatives for Lionsgate, the film’s production company, have not commented.
