Slow Horses is officially returning to Slough House for a seventh outing, with Apple TV+ confirming another installment of the acclaimed espionage drama, even before the fifth season has reached audiences. The new chapter, based on Mick Herron’s eighth novel Bad Actors, centers on Lamb and his team of disgraced intelligence operatives as they attempt to track down a deeply embedded mole within the upper ranks of the British government. Their mission is to eliminate the threat before the infiltrator can undermine the stability of the state. This narrative direction follows the show's signature blend of gritty tension and cynical humor, which has become a hallmark of its storytelling style.
The decision to extend the series further comes at a time when Season 5 is still awaiting its premiere, scheduled for September 24. Notably, the sixth season had already received approval the previous year. That upcoming season is adapted from Herron’s Joe Country and Slough House, books six and seven in the Slough House series, and will feature the misfit spies on the run. Their flight is prompted by a dangerous entanglement with Diana Taverner, played by Scott Thomas, whose manipulations escalate into a lethal game of power and payback.
Apple TV+ has emphasized the global appeal of Slow Horses, underscoring its distinctive mix of dark British wit and tightly executed action sequences. Jay Hunt, Apple TV+’s Creative Director for Europe, highlighted the series' wide fanbase and expressed enthusiasm over Gary Oldman's continued portrayal of Lamb, calling it a performance of remarkable caliber.
Oldman, who recently earned a knighthood and now holds the title Sir Gary Oldman, has spoken with admiration about the show's worldwide success, referring to its reach as “truly international” during a conversation with Deadline’s Breaking Baz. His portrayal of the disheveled yet shrewd Jackson Lamb remains central to the series' appeal and enduring popularity.
Production of Slow Horses is overseen by See-Saw Films, with a team of experienced executive producers including Jamie Laurenson, Hakan Kousetta, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, Dan Hassid, Mick Herron, Gail Mutrux, Douglas Urbanski, and Oldman himself. Ben Vanstone is once again adapting the story for television and will serve as executive producer on the seventh season, which is set to be directed by Robert McKillop. The production company See-Saw Films now operates under the Mediawan banner.
