Netflix commits $1 billion investment in Mexico

Netflix has announced a significant investment in Mexico's film and television industry. The streaming giant has committed to investing $1 billion in the country over the next four years, from 2025 to 2028, as announced by co-CEO Ted Sarandos during a press conference with Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum.

According to Netflix, this investment will benefit Mexican production companies and contribute to the growth of the local audiovisual industry. The company will also invest $2 million in Mexico City's iconic Churubusco Studios to upgrade its facilities.

Netflix will continue to create and fund programs that help develop diverse and creative talents behind the camera. In August last year, the company unveiled a fund worth over $1 million to support talent development in Mexico.

Netflix has a long history in Mexico, dating back to 2011 when the streaming service became available in the country. In 2015, Netflix produced its first series outside the U.S. in Mexico, Club de Cuervos. The company has since established its Latin American headquarters in Mexico City.

According to Sarandos, Netflix's local production strategy is key to its success in Mexico. "Being local is very important to us," he said. "It's why all of our series and films in Mexico are made in partnership with local production companies and local partners."

Sarandos highlighted several success stories, including the Oscar-winning film Roma, Alejandro G. Iñárritu's Bardo, and Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio. He also mentioned the company's work with Mexican creators on hundreds of other series and films.

Netflix is excited about its future plans in Mexico, including a new documentary on the life and art of Juan Gabriel. The company's investment in Mexico is expected to have a significant impact on the local entertainment industry, creating new opportunities for talent development, job creation, and cultural exchange.
