Spain Boss Luis de la Fuente Hints at Impact Sub Role for Lamine Yamal at 2026 World Cup

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has indicated that Lamine Yamal could be deployed as an impactful substitute during the 2026 World Cup, as the Barcelona forward continues his recovery from a hamstring injury that rules him out for the rest of the domestic season.

The setback has ended Yamal’s participation in the final phase of Barcelona’s La Liga campaign, but attention has quickly shifted to his recovery timeline with Spain. While the teenager is expected to be fit for the tournament in North America, the national team is approaching his return with caution.

Reports from Sport suggest that Spain are considering introducing the 18-year-old gradually during the group stage, using him in short spells rather than full matches. A return to the starting lineup may only be considered once the competition reaches the knockout rounds.

De la Fuente has stressed the importance of tactical flexibility when managing players who are not fully fit. He believes even limited minutes from a talent like Yamal can be decisive, pointing to examples such as Dani Olmo, who made a strong impact in previous international tournaments despite fitness concerns.

The Spain coach also emphasized long-term planning, explaining that the priority is to arrive at the most crucial stage of the World Cup with players in peak condition. National team doctor Óscar Celada reinforced this approach, warning that recovery alone is not enough and highlighting the risk of re-injury given the demanding schedule of games every three to four days, alongside constant monitoring and coordination with clubs.
