The long-running debate between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo has gained another major perspective after former Real Madrid defender Marcelo shared his personal verdict.

Having spent 15 years at the Santiago Bernabéu, Marcelo was uniquely positioned to judge both icons up close. While he enjoyed a successful partnership with Cristiano Ronaldo between 2009 and 2018, his toughest on-field battles came against Lionel Messi during El Clásico clashes.

Speaking in an interview with RomarioTV, the Brazilian left-back made his stance clear when asked who gave him more problems in his career. He described Messi as the more difficult opponent, praising his exceptional intelligence and awareness on the pitch.
Marcelo explained that Messi seemed to anticipate situations before they unfolded, highlighting how the Argentine star understands positioning, movement, and defensive gaps better than anyone he faced.
Despite his close friendship and successful trophy-winning partnership with Ronaldo, Marcelo admitted that Messi’s presence on the pitch consistently caused more trouble during matches.
Their rivalry history also adds depth to his opinion. Before becoming teammates at Real Madrid, Marcelo and Ronaldo had a heated encounter in a 2008 international friendly between Brazil and Portugal, where tensions briefly escalated after a series of aggressive exchanges on the pitch.
However, after Ronaldo’s move to Spain, both players formed a strong bond, combining effectively down the left side and winning multiple Champions League titles together.
On the numbers side of football’s greatest debate, Ronaldo remains ahead in total career goals with 967 strikes for club and country, having recently passed the 900-goal milestone. Messi also reached 900 goals in March while playing for Inter Miami in a CONCACAF Champions Cup match.
Statistically, Messi holds a slightly better scoring efficiency, averaging a goal every 104 minutes compared to Ronaldo’s 111 minutes.
Marcelo also reflected on his own career achievements, including 25 trophies with Real Madrid, such as five Champions League titles and six La Liga crowns. Despite this success, he admitted that winning a World Cup would have meant more than all his European honours.
When asked if he would exchange his Champions League medals for a World Cup trophy with Brazil, Marcelo said he would make that sacrifice without hesitation.
Meanwhile, both Messi and Ronaldo continue to eye the 2026 World Cup in North America, with Messi aiming to defend the title he won in 2022.
